Overview

McGuireWoods LLP is looking for an experienced Managing Clerk in our New York office. This position serves as the dedicated resource to track deadlines, advise on court rules and properly submit all mandatory documents in courts located in the Tri-State area. The ideal candidate will have 4 or more years of experience in a similiar role, will be proficient with the New York Civil Practice Law and Rules and the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, will be team and service oriented, and will have strong communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and facilitate the processing of court filings to extract sensitive critical dates and, when necessary, modify calendar entries with explanatory text to supplement the automated rule-set information in the docketing software. 
  • Review documents to be filed with a court for form and procedural compliance to identify and remedy potential defects based upon the particular court’s requirements. 
  • Screen and review incoming court documents and office correspondence to calculate and capture relevant deadlines for entry into the docketing database, and ensure proper filing of documents with each court and related response deadlines.  
  • File documents in, and retrieve information from, court docket databases, e.g. CM/ECF/PACER, Web Civil Supreme, Unified Court System, NYCAL, JAMS and Rocket-Docket New Jersey. 
  • Keep abreast of developments, procedures and rules in the forums where the firm practices, with an emphasis on continuing to develop and update a working knowledge of court rules and procedures in state and federal courts in New York and New Jersey.  
  • Retrieve documents from the assigned metropolitan area state and federal courts and archives and interact with outside court vendors that perform such functions for the firm, including tracking vendor requests and confirming requests are completed accurately. 

Qualifications

 

  • Qualified candidate will possess 4-6 years of related experience. Combination of college level training or paralegal certificate along with experience that demonstrates an ability to do the essential functions of the position.
  • Some bankruptcy experience helpful.
  • Knowledge of CompuLaw (or similar automated rule-set docketing software), Pacer, Lexis-Nexis, Westlaw and MS Office.
  • Ability to rely on knowledge of federal, state and local rules of procedure and practice, to ensure that all deadlines reflected in court filings are accurately recorded and incorporate any client requirements into case management calendars.
  • Excellent communication, strong customer/client service & interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work with individuals at all organizational levels.
  • Strong commitment to excellence in all docketing functions recognizing that accuracy and thoroughness in docketing deadlines is critical for the firm’s clients and the firm.
