    McGuireWoods has a need for an Appeal Docket Specialist to join its firm-wide docketing group in either Charlotte, Chicago, Washington D.C., Tysons, VA or Richmond, VA.  The Docket Specialist has a broad knowledge of the Federal Rules of Appeallate Procedure, FRCP and state rules of procedure, local rules and court practices, and other applicable rules and regulations. As part of the firm’s software supported docket program, the docket specialist will use firm software to docket and report critical dates.

    Responsibilities

    • Collecting, processing, and maintaining appeals cases received from the Appellate Practice Team.
    • Maintaining and updating search strategy to capture appeals for all courts where the firm practices. 
    • Performing quality control on appeals cases and modified or amended decisions, and performing all edits to initial data entry.
    • Creating event reports on and monitoring the appeals calendar and appeals caseload spreadsheets.
    • Researches procedural matters, checks case histories, updates briefing schedule to keep Appellate Practice Team informed.
    • Docketing and tracking of case dockets through CourtLink/Pacer.
    • Case management from initial filing through trial/settlement and appeal. 
    • Prioritizing deadlines, maintain timely, effective communication with Docketing Manager/team and Appellate Practice Team utilizing critical thinking skills to ensure timely and accurate case completion

    Qualifications

    • Minimum of two years of experience as a general litigation calendar or docket clerk or as a paralegal, legal assistant or legal support role with docket responsibilities.
    • Combination of college level training or paralegal certificate along with experience that demonstrates an ability to do the essential functions of the position.
    • Knowledge of CompuLaw (or similar docketing software), Pacer, Lexis-Nexis, CourtLink, Westlaw and MS Office.
    • Knowledgeable of final orders, court rulings and decisions, and the skill to compile rulings in support of the Appellate Practice Team.
    • Knowledgeable of the Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure, the local rules and working practices of the various federal courts of appeals.
