    McGuireWoods LLP has an opening for a Practice Assistant (Legal Secretary) Senior Manager. This senior level position provides management, supervision and direction to the Practice Assistants and Practice Assistant (PA) Supervisors for three offices. The position is based in Richmond, Virginia with support (some travel) for the Charlottesville and Norfolk offices. This position ensures the Practice Assistant staff provides the highest level of administrative support and client service to the firm’s attorneys and clients.  Working through direct reports, the senior manager is responsible for performance management, ensuring assigned staff maintains appropriate skill levels to perform their job responsibilities and provides guidance and coaching to direct reports while fostering a team environment.     Responsibilities

    • Serves as manager, mentor, coach, role model and facilitator to PA’s and PA Supervisors.
    • Supervises PA Supervisors’ execution of ongoing responsibilities, administrative staff management, and human resources responsibilities.
    • Manages the performance of direct reports providing on-going feedback and coaching. Establishes goals and objectives and completes performance evaluations.
    • Participates in interview process assessing applicants and coordinates interviews with attorneys, if applicable.  
    • Consults with PA Supervisors prior to new employee arriving regarding mentor assignment and checklist of items to be accomplished during the first 90 days.
    • Works with Training Manager(s) to design, assess and coordinate programs for PA’s; coordinates ongoing developmental training for direct reports particularly as it relates to established goals and objectives and varying career stages.
    • Serves as the escalation point in resolving issues. Creates and maintains solid relationships with attorneys, paralegals, and staff. 
    • Interacts daily with PA Supervisor(s)/local Office Coordinators regarding coverage and work assignments.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent educational experience and a minimum of five years related supervisory/management experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience, law firm experience preferred.
    • Ability to interact effectively with all levels in the Firm.
    • Skills in counseling and mentoring subordinates; ability to deliver disciplinary actions as appropriate.
    • Ability to travel to other offices as needed.
    • Skills in problem resolution while remaining calm in high-pressure situations.
    • Innovative and strategic thinking.
