Overview

McGuireWoods is looking for an experienced and capable Regulatory & Compliance Paralegal to join our State & Federal Utilities team across the Carolinas and Virginia. This isn't a traditional support role; you’ll manage the full trajectory of complex utilities commission filings, navigating everything from routine compliance filings to annual cost recovery proceedings to major rate cases. We are looking for a team-oriented professional who can own keeping these high-stakes matters on track but who can also participate meaningfully in the work of the group through research, drafting and direct client service.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the electronic filing process for the NCUC, SCPSC, and Virginia SCC, ensuring 100% timeliness and accuracy.
  • Own the lifecycle of administrative litigation, including preparing applications, managing testimony, managing service, assisting with hearing preparation, and managing any post-hearing obligations.
  • Conduct substantive legal research using Westlaw, PACER, and FERC and other PUC websites to support filings and client inquiries.
  • Maintain hyper-organized dockets as cases progress, ensuring the legal team and the client stay ahead of statutory deadlines.
  • Serve as a personable and responsive point of contact for a diverse group of internal attorneys, as well as clients and parties to litigated proceedings.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of relevant experience in state or federal regulatory matters or administrative litigation. Direct experience with utilities regulation is preferred.
  • Proven expertise in state and federal electronic filing systems (NCUC, SCPSC, or Virginia SCC) and legal research platforms.
  • A Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Paralegal Certification from an ABA accredited program is preferred.
  • A proactive communicator who prioritizes accuracy and teamwork, with a reputation for being exceptionally responsive and reliable during high-pressure filing windows.
